Garage Door Panel Replacement
There are many different designs and types of garage doors. For instance there are a variety of garage door doors that are just a one-piece door. Meaning that it’s not made of panels but instead is made up of just one big piece. These are not the types of garage doors we will be talking about today though. We are going to focus on the sectional garage doors that have panels that can be replaced.
Why replace a garage door panel?
There are a number of reasons but the most likely is to replace a broken or damaged panel. So if you have to replace a panel what should you do? The first step should be in identifying the garage door that you have. There are a number of large manufacturers and they might still manufacture the exact panel you require! If this is not possible then we can take a look at some panels that would match your garage door. It’s not completely necessary to change all of the panels but you might want to paint all the panels once installed. The sun tends to bleach colors out of the paint so the new panel will stand out.
Types of panels
This list could go on for a very long time. There are a very large number of panels and designs to choose from. So I’m going to add a short list which will just label the materials. The styles are almost endless.
- Steel Garage Doors. These are by far the most common. Those white garage doors you see everywhere are more than likely made of steel.
- Wood Garage Doors. Wooden garage doors often come as one piece garage doors but there are sectional options available on certain wooden garage doors.
- Vinyl Garage Doors. Very durable and beautiful as well. If you’re interested in vinyl you will not be disappointed with that option.
- Glass Garage Doors. Glass garage door panels are among the most beautiful when it comes to garage door designs. This is definitely one to look at if money is not issue and the aesthetics of your home means a lot to you. Though there are beautiful steel, wood and vinyl garage doors.
Replacing the panels is not too difficult but most companies won’t sell directly to a person who is not certified as a garage door technician. If you find the right panel though then you can continue.
Removing the panels
Using an electric drill you can detach the damaged panels. They are held by brackets so you might have to remove the panels above as well depending on the model that you are working with. Once all are undone you will have to get it off the tracks either by hooks or removing all the panels.
Placing the new panel
Depending on the model you can start putting the new panel or you can just place the new one where it needs to be. Then you can place the other panels where they belong. Then you can start adding the hinges and necessary pieces.
